Taco Bell's infamous Doritos Locos Tacos is getting another member of the family; today Taco Bell announced that they'll be launching a new Doritos Locos Taco on August 22 nationwide, according to a press release.

The Doritos Locos Tacos, which replace a standard crunchy taco shell with a taco shell made of Doritos chips, have become one of the brand's best-selling items. "Nacho Cheese. Cool Ranch. What's next? It's coming 8.22.13. #_DLT," the brand tweeted.

According to a press release, Taco Bell will be "adding más heat this summer with the arrival of the next yet-to-be revealed Doritos® Locos Tacos on August 22nd," and while they're keeping the actual flavor quiet, it seems obvious that the next choice should be Spicy Nachos Doritos. Back in June, the brand tweeted a Vine video that showed the words "New DLT" lit up in flames.

Keep your eye on Twitter to catch any hints they may release, then start taking bets on the next flavor. There is a slim chance that it might be the jalapeño-flavored Doritos chips, after all. Less popular, but it would still be a great addition to the stoner food menu.

Update: The Daily Meal has received a shipment of Doritos flavors that might just be the next flavor: Ranch-Dipped Hot Wings, Spicy Chipotle Barbecue, Enchilada Supreme, Flamas, Salsa Verde, and Tapatíos are top contenders.


Taco Bell's biggest product launch ever includes huge marketing push

Taco Bell fans around the country burned the midnight oil today in anticipation of the chain's Doritos Locos Tacos debut. The company is calling the new taco – which features a hard shell made out of Nacho Cheese Doritos – its "biggest product introduction in history."

The launch, which officially took place at midnight, comes 50 years after the original crunch taco appeared on menus. The item also includes seasoned beef, shredded lettuce and cheddar cheese, and is available for a suggested retail price of $1.29, or $1.69 for a Doritos Locos Tacos Supreme.

A Doritos Locos Tacos Big Box Meal includes a Doritos Locos Tacos Supreme, Burrito Supreme, Crunchy Taco and a medium drink. For people looking for lower-calorie, lower-fat options, Doritos Locos Tacos is available Fresco Style.

Taco Bell partnered with Frito-Lay, a division of PepsiCo. to reinvent the chain's most popular menu item.

Greg Creed, CEO, Taco Bell Corp., tasked his team and the chain's partners to come up with the "industry's next big thing."

"It was an idea so simple and brilliant . a flavor pairing just waiting to happen," he said. "Taco Bell founder Glen Bell has been recognized for his 'Recipes for Success.' At the top of that list: the best ideas often are the most simple."

According to Creed, four new production lines were built to handle the proprietary recipe and the demand that consumers had shown in test marketing. Taco Bell has produced more than 50 million Doritos Locos Tacos shells in anticipation of the initial launch.

Cool Ranch version to follow

Doritos Locos Tacos was test marketed for one year in three cities (Bakersfield and Fresno, Calif., and Toledo, Ohio) – where one out of every three purchases included the Doritos Locos Tacos. In addition to the test markets, the shell itself was consumer tested at Frito-Lay, resulting in positive feedback.

Initially available in Nacho Cheese, Taco Bell plans to introduce a Cool Ranch version this fall.

"With the wide range of Doritos flavors available, the possibilities for this product platform are endless," said Creed, noting that fans have begun to guess and request future Doritos Locos Tacos shells.

Massive marketing push

Taco Bell will support the introduction of Doritos Locos Tacos with its biggest marketing effort in recent history. The company plans on an integrated marketing and consumer engagement effort that includes advertising (television, print, radio, outdoor, online), digital, social and public relations.

Internally, the company already launched a "Team Member" engagement effort, with more than 135,000 employees nationwide receiving a Doritos Locos Tacos launch box with t-shirts, friends-and-family coupons, and a brochure detailing Glen Bell's legacy.

Doritos Locos Tacos television advertising, created by Draftfcb Orange County, will feature the company's new tagline, "Live Más" which reflects the brand insight of "if you never do, you'll never know." This insight is further developed in the brand's explorer-type roots, and by shifting from "food as fuel" to "food as experience."

Introduced in February 2012 in brand television spots, Live Más celebrates getting more out of life, encouraging exploration and discovery beyond food. The television spots also integrate music from Taco Bell's Feed the Beat program, which since 2006 has provided free Fourthmeal to hundreds of up-and-coming bands and artists.

Taco Bell will integrate the brand and Doritos Locos Tacos at a music conference in Austin, Texas, from March 13 through March 17. In partnership with the Hype Machine, Taco Bell will host the Feed the Beat Concert Series at the Hype Hotel, where music lovers can discover more than 50 artists and sample Doritos Locos Tacos.

For music fans not attending the Feed the Beat Concert Series, Doritos Locos Tacos holsters will feature a QR code to exclusive video content showcasing performances from the Hype Hotel. A new performance will be featured each week.

Furthering the engagement, fans will have an opportunity to share their Doritos Locos Tacos impressions through Facebook and Twitter. Thanks to the Taco Bell Mobile App, which includes augmented reality via medium and large cups, as well as the Doritos Locos Tacos Big Box Meal, consumers will be able to connect with the brand and others by viewing a compilation of tweets and Facebook comments.

Finally, from March 12 through May 6, several tweets featuring the hashtag #DoritosLocosTacos will be shown on digital billboards in New York City's Times Square and on Los Angeles' Sunset Boulevard. Once a post appears on a billboard, a snapshot will be sent to the creator for download and sharing with friends, and located for viewing on www.doritoslocostacos.com.

Taco Bell employees are clocked on their serving time

While nailing the Taco Bell job interview is a breeze, the demands of the job can at times be a little more challenging. With Taco Bell being fast food, "fast" is an aspect that factors into the job, and managers pay close attention to how quickly crew members are taking orders, assembling, and serving food.

According to one employee on Reddit, their Taco Bell when firing on all cylinders, served around "100-200 customers in the drive-thru" and "100 in the store" per hour. In order to make these customer service numbers, employees are clocked on their speed per customer.

Another employee on Reddit said that for an employee working the drive-thru, they were expected to take a customer's order and send them on their way in the span of three minutes and 30 seconds.

The one thing that really throws off this Taco Bell speed clock is when a customer places a huge order of a bunch of small items. "I always feel bad for people who order like one item or just a drink and have to sit behind three cars with 70+ items between them," the employee said.

Maybe consider cutting the Taco Bell employees a break and going inside next time you want 50 soft tacos.


Taco Bell joins fast-food booze bandwagon with new U.S. eateries

Yum Brands Inc's Taco Bell chain next week will debut a new restaurant concept that dumps the drive-thru and brings on the booze as it seeks to appeal to hip, young city dwellers and fend off popular rival Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc.

The first of the chain's new Taco Bell Cantina restaurants will open in Chicago's hipster Wicker Park neighborhood on Sept. 22, with a second later this month in San Francisco.

The Wicker Park restaurant will serve beer, wine, sangria and twisted freezes - frozen drinks spiked with rum, vodka or tequila. The San Francisco outlet will serve beer and wine only.

The Cantina restaurants, like Chipotle's roughly 1,900 restaurants, will have open kitchens. The Cantina restaurants also will offer a tapas-style menu of shareable appetizers during designated hours each evening, in addition to the standard Taco Bell menu.

Chipotle already offers alcohol at about 1,000 restaurants. Most of those sell both beer and margaritas, while some sell only beer.

The move from Taco Bell comes as U.S. restaurant chains experiment with new ways to add sales and lure customers.

Taco Bell, which recently had a huge hit with its Doritos Locos tacos, debuted a Chipotle-like 'Cantina” menu a few years ago and is testing a separate urban taco concept called U.S. Taco Co in Huntington Beach, California.

On other fronts, 75 Starbucks Corp cafes offer that chain's 'evenings” menu that includes craft, local and regional beer, wine and small plates of food. Starbucks goal is to have 'evenings” in roughly 2,000 Starbucks locations by 2019.

Taco Bell, which now has more than 6,000 restaurants, plans to add 2,000 new restaurants by 2022. It did not say how many new or remodeled restaurants would become Taco Bell Cantinas.

“This launch of our first line of sauce packet-inspired chips gives our fans a new way to access a taste of Taco Bell,” said Marisa Thalberg, Taco Bell's chief brand officer. “Our sauce packets are one of the brand’s most unique aspects and were the natural choice for both the flavors and packaging of our tortilla chips.”

These spiced chips may seem like they're out to get Doritos (arguably the world's most popular flavored tortilla chip). But Taco Bell and Doritos have enjoyed a uniquely tasty partnership over the years, as evidenced by the wildly popular Doritos Locos Taco. Will the taco now be made with Taco Bell tortilla chips? Only time will tell.

Taco Bell has had a pretty exciting year, from the super-sweet Kit-Kat stuffed quesadillas to its clothing partnership with Forever 21.

And while a flavored chip launch might not be as wacky as a candy-stuffed tortilla, Taco Bell's most devoted fans will now be able to satisfy any craving for hot sauce around the clock.


4. The Newest Menu Items

Want to try the newest items at Taco Bell? There are plenty to choose from. One option is the Grande Nachos Box – Seasoned Beef. As the name would indicate, it’s a big box filled with a delicious pile of nachos, which are topped with seasoned beef. You’ll also get a medium fountain drink, based on facts from the official Taco Bell website. This box costs five bucks. Another new-ish menu item to enjoy is the Spicy Loaded Nacho Taco. It has two hundred and ninety calories and costs just one dollar. The Spicy Loaded Nacho Taco comes with seasoned beef, cheese, jalapeno peppers, nacho cheese sauce, red strips and lettuce. You can upgrade and add on to your heart’s content. You may want to wash your Spicy Loaded Nacho Taco down with a Watermelon Candy Freeze, which is also a feature of the “new” menu. It costs $2.39. There are plenty of new menu items to try and all of them sound good. Maybe it’s not the healthiest food in the world. It’s fast food, after all. As an occasional indulgence, it will hit the spot. In America, fast food still sells like crazy. People know they should be eating clean and all of that, but they just can’t resist the fast food taste and convenience. People amble into Taco Bell locations to get what they crave, or cruise through drive-thrus to get their Taco Bell fix. Hopefully, they balance their love of Taco Bell by preparing healthy foods at home much of the time. Balance is the key to making fast food a part of your life, without the fast food downside. To be frank, the Cool Ranch Doritos Locos taco from Taco Bell was a bit of a disappointment. While the Cheesy Gordita Crunch (CGC) will always reign supreme on my Taco Bell order, the Nacho Cheese Doritos Locos often plays Robin to the CGC’s Batman. The Cool Ranch Doritos Locos taco just tastes like you’re eating a regular hard taco with ‘a little something off about it’. I guess it’s back to the drawing board for T-Bell. Hope the next move is to really blow our minds with the Taco Supreme Doritos Locos Tacos. 2.5 out of 5 tortillas.


You Can Officially Make Your Own Doritos Locos Tacos

Now family taco night can feature nacho cheese-flavored taco shells, whether or not you're eating at Taco Bell. According to Bloomberg Businessweek, Old El Paso is rolling out a supermarket version of a cheesy taco shell, much like those of the beloved Doritos Locos Tacos.

Apparently, the brand launched a similar product eight years ago, but it never resonated with consumers. And now that Taco Bell is making a fortune off of its cheesy Doritos shells, Old El Paso decided to give the product another try. Bold Nacho Cheese Flavored Taco Shells will be available at grocery stores nationwide in August.

Today’s Menu: Turkey Tacos w/ Refried Beans


Simple, easy, and delicious! It was Turkey tacos w/ Refried Beans for dinner tonight. It had been a while since I had Tacos. I used Honeysuckle White Extra Lean Ground Turkey, 99/1 and 140 calories and 0 carbs. I wanted to use Jennie – O Extra Lean which is 20 fewer calories but they were out of stock on it. I browned the Turkey until it was no longer pink, I fried it in Canola oil. As it finished browning I added a packet of Old El Paso Original Taco Seasoning.

I prepared several items for the filling to give everyone a variety. I prepared a can of Bush’s Reduced Sodium Black Beans, a small can of Del Monte Whole Kernel Corn, sliced Black Olives, a jar of Dunbar’s Sweet Roasted Peppers, shredded Lettuce, Kraft Mexican Taco Cheese, and two types of Taco Sauce Ortega Mild Taco Sauce and Taco Bell Bold and Creamy Chipotle Sauce. So as you can see everyone had plenty of choices for their Taco fillings. I loaded mine with a bit of everything! I used the Ortega Mild Taco sauce. I also warmed up a can of Old El Paso Reduced Sodium Refried Beans. Just a note about the Dunbar’s Sweet Roasted Peppers, this was the first time I tried them. These were fantastic! Great flavor and went great with everything. For dessert/snack later tonight a 100 Calorie Mini Bag of Jolly Time Pop Corn.
